Washington State and County Checklists
Notes: These checklists were developed over nine years, with the assistance of active state birders,
and were originally published in
from 1992-2000, when the last of 40 checklists was completed.
For uniformity, checklists follow the taxonomic order of the American Ornithologists Union, currently "The A.O.U. Check-list of North American Birds, Seventh Edition, including Supplements".
County checklist abundance codes, located after bird names, are as follows:
- 1 = Common
- 2 = Uncommon
- 3 = Usually seen every year
- 4 = Rare
- 5 = Less than 5 records
- ext = Extirpated
- hyp = Hypothetical
- int = Introduced
Checklists are updated on a regular basis to add newly documented species, and to modify abundance codes so they more accurately reflect the current abundance status of species in each county.
It is noteworthy to remember that current checklist totals may reflect counties in Washington that are seldom birded or birded by a very few persons, while other counties are much more heavily populated and birded. Other factors to keep in mind are the numbers and types of variation in habitat present in a county, whether there is a migration corridor in the county, county location in the state, county proximity to the birding population, etc.
If you disagree with species listed or abundance codes on checklists please contact
at info@wabirder.com. We welcome your
willingness to help us present checklists that accurately reflect the birds in Washington.
If you observe species not listed on checklists, please send information about those species
to
at info@wabirder.com.
